On this site we are assembling infomation on the
Common Good of all burghs in Scotland. Currently
this information is largely restricted to that
obtained from Local Authorities when undertaking
research for our 2005 report.
We hope to recruit Correspondents in each of the burghs who can help to expand the information. If you are interested, please contact me.
Meanwhile, to visit a burgh page, please select from the drop down list. You can also visit pages for each Local Authority (click on Local Authorities sub-menu above).
Contact me, Andy Wightman.
Click here to download a full list of burghs that had Town Councils as defined by the the First Schedule of the Local Government (Scotland) Act of 1947 or which were subsequently given burgh status (I only know of one at the moment - Stevenston in Ayrshire). There are, however, Common Good Funds for Dunlop in East Ayrshire, Aberdour in Fife and Fochabers in Moray. If someone can tell me if and when these were given burgh status under the 1947 Act, I'd be grateful.
