Data supplied by Highland Council in 2005

Highland Council reported no Common Good land held in Cromarty.

Common Good Fund

In the 2005/06 Accounts of Highland Council Cromarty Common Good Fund is reported as having a balance of £28,000.

My Commentary

In Minutes of Cromarty Community Council there is mention of common land and concerns about encroachment by new build. One member suggested that any land whose owner cannot be traced will belong to Cromarty Estates. This is a bit presumptious but maybe has an element of truth (see brief history, below)!

One local contact told me that there were in fact two properties held by Cromarty Common Good, namely the Victoria Hall built by the Cromarty Artillery Volunteers in the 1880 and the former parish church hall.

Cromarty was a Royal Burgh up until 1684. Prior to this,
a puppet burgh council in the control of the then laird, John Urquhart, sold the whole burgh property to the laird in 1670. The council then petitioned to be removed from the roll of Royal Burghs so as to avoid paying cess. This was achieved in 1684.
