Common Good Fund

In the 2005/06 Accounts of Highland Council Dingwall Common Good Fund is reported as having a balance of £149,000.

My Commentary

In common with so many Burghs in Scotland, Dingwall once possessed extensive lands. As reported in the Municipal Corporations in Scotland Parliamentary Report of 1836,

Dingwall had at one time a considerable extent of landed Property, which does not, however, appear to have been turned to much account whil in the possession of the burgh, nor to have produced any considerable revenue.
The town property began to be feud out, and far the greater part was so alienated, more than forty years ago. In most cases the grants were made to persons connected with or influential in the burgh, and without and competition or publication............

The burgh now retains only seven or eight acres in property.

Further research is required to establish the full extent of the assets held by the Dingwall Common Good Fund.
